We work the lock with the door open. Smooth open but stiff closed means alignment; stiff either way means the cylinder. That decides the whole job.

Lock Repair FAQs

Half the key snapped off in the lock. Should I try to pull it out?

Please do not. Pliers and superglue are the two things that turn a ten-minute extraction into a cylinder replacement — glue bonds the fragment to the pins, and pliers push it deeper into the keyway. Leave it where it is and call.

My key is getting harder to turn. Is that the lock?

Often it is the door, not the lock. If the door has dropped or the frame has swollen, the bolt is binding against the strike and you are forcing it every time you lock up. That is what eventually snaps a key.

Is a repair worth it, or should I just replace it?

If the cylinder is sound, repair is usually better value and keeps hardware that matches the rest of the door. If it is worn through we say so rather than sell you a service that fails again in six months.

Can you come out at night for a snapped key?

Yes. A key snapped in the front door is a lockout, and we treat it as one — 24/7, every day of the year.

My sliding door drags and will not lock. Is that the lock?

Usually not. On the aluminium sliders in Sydney's units and 60s-to-90s houses it is nearly always worn rollers or a damaged track: the door drops a few millimetres, the lock no longer meets its keeper, and forcing it wears the mechanism as well. We check the rollers and the track before touching the lock, because a new lock on a dropped door fails the same way.

The lock on my apartment's front door is broken — can I just replace it?

Check with your strata first. In most Sydney schemes the entry door and its original hardware are common property, and a fire-rated entry door in particular must not be drilled or modified — doing so can void its rating. We will tell you which side of that line your job sits on before we start, and deal with the strata manager if that is easier.
